In 2005 and 2006, many companies and consumers were writing to their bank, demanding refunds of charges they incurred as a customer.

Martin from Bank Complaints offered a unique service. He would help companies get money back from the banks on unfair overdraft charges, misapplied interest rates on business accounts and mortgages and the other sneaky ways banks dream up to take money from you.

Martin used Meridian Delta's email service to first inform companies that they may have been overcharged (indeed, Martin identified £1,500 worth of overcharging on my personal account!) and to manage the reclaim of that money.

Martin stayed with us for a couple of years before legal action by the OFT against the banks began, at which point all potential refunds were frozen in the system.

Objective Martin had been running a successful promotional goods business for a number of years before launching his real passion, Bank Complaints.

From a complete standing start, our charge was to find the way to get companies to call. Companies are often scared to stand up to their banks (especially when they are using their credit facilities), and our job was to help remove that fear.

If a bank has overcharged by a few thousand over the years, it's not worth Martin's time to chase it up. Therefore, he was looking for larger companies - those most likely to be the targets for the banks' flagrant overcharging. We put him in front of these customers.
What were the results? Both Martin and Meridian Delta were stunned by the sheer disillusionment of bank customers. We were both expecting a decent response, but what we got back for Martin surprised us both/

Martin, originally meaning to use us every month, was swamped by enquiries from the 100,000 businesses we emailed. He now uses us every 3 or 4 months so he can pay proper attention to the concerns of clients (although, at the time of writing, the marketing had been on pause since early 2008 due to the long-in-coming OFT enquiry into bank charges)..

All figures given are based on customer correspondence with us. Email marketing is a form of advertising, and as with all advertising it can be successful as well as unsuccessful. We do not guarantee any level of response. On average, for every 1,000 email sent out, there are 1-2 opt outs, even fewer than fax broadcasting! When we receive an opt-out, we remove the number from all databases to ensure they are never emailed by us or the pool participants again.
